President hails Vietnam Red Cross Society’s activities

Hanoi, March 23 (VNA) – President Truong Tan Sang appreciated the Vietnam Red Cross Society (VRCS)’s humanitarian activities in recent times during a working session in Hanoi on March 23.

He particularly several effective initiatives, such as the “cow bank” designed for poor and border districts, and others in support of disaster-hit victims.

The leader also asked ministries and agencies to clear any arising obstacles to help VRCS fulfill its duties.

VRCS leaders updated him about the positive results of campaigns for the poor and Agent Orange victims, health check-ups and treatment, and humanitarian blood donation drives.

More than 3 trillion VND (136.3 million USD) was raised to benefit 17 million living in need last year.

This year, the VRCS strives to present at least 1 million New Year gifts to poor households, offer health check-ups to 1 million people and collected 1.4 million units of blood.

Emergency funds will also be established to cope with natural disasters, they said.
