PM requests social order after anti-Chinese protests

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on May 15 issued a notice to ministries, agencies and authorities of centrally-run cities and provinces, asking them to ensure security and order after protests against China caused extensive damage and injuries.

The focus of the protests was China’s illegal placement of its oil rig Haiyang Shiyou – 981 and a flotilla of ships in Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone and continental shelf.

Some protesters badly damaged facilities owned by foreign businesses, affecting their operation and upsetting social order, the PM noted.

In the notice, PM Dung asked for a prevention of all violations and an application of measures, including educational campaigns to raise public awareness about safeguarding national sovereignty peacefully in line with Vietnamese and international laws.

Businesses, especially foreign-invested ones, will receive all possible support to keep them running and their staff and assets safe.

He requested them to update diplomatic agencies and foreign investors of the Party and State’s policies and guidelines, and reiterated that Vietnam will do its best to provide assistance and ensure the absolute safety of foreign citizens, companies and agencies working in the country.
