Party Chief’s Visits Create New Momentum for Ties with Indonesia, Myanmar


The visits to Indonesia (August 22-24) and Myanmar (August 24-26) by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong marked a new milestone and created a new momentum for reinforcing political trust and boosting all around cooperation between Vietnam and the two countries.
Strengthening the strategic partnership with Indonesia
During his two-day stay in Indonesia, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong had talks with Indonesian President Joko Widodo, met the President of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) Megawati Sukarnoputri and leaders of Indonesian legislative bodies, delivered a speech at Indonesia’s Centre for Strategic and International Studies and the Vietnam-Indonesia Business Forum.

During their talks, the two sides reached common perspectives on major orientations to bolster a bilateral partnership and promote cooperation and development. The leaders believed that the two countries will reach a two-way trade turnover of 10 billion dollars. On the occasion the two sides signed six cooperation deals.

Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and the Indonesian leaders highlighted the significance of maintaining peace and stability in the region, ensuring security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in the East Sea, peacefully resolving disputes, and complying with international law, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982. They also stressed the need to fully and effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and soon reach a Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea.

They affirmed that Vietnam and Indonesia will continue coordinating together closely and with other ASEAN members to realise the Community’s goals, promote the bloc’s solidarity and cooperation, build a united and strong ASEAN, and bring into play the grouping’s central role in regional structure.

New Landmark in Vietnam-Myanmar relations

In Myanmar, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong held talks with President Htin Kyaw, met Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and other leaders of political parties and visited Yangon.

During their talks, the two countries’ leaders reached orientations and solutions to beef up the ties comprehensively, while agreeing to continue working closely and supporting each other at international and regional frameworks, especially ASEAN, the East-West corridor and the Mekong sub-region.

On the occasion, the two sides issued a joint statement on the establishment of the Vietnam-Myanmar comprehensive partnership while inking four cooperation agreements.

Regarding the East Sea issue, the leaders said that all disputes should be resolved by peaceful means in line with international laws, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea 1982. They also stressed the need to fully and effectively implement the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and soon reach a Code of Conduct (COC) in the East Sea to maintain peace, stability, security and cooperation in the region.

Vietnam-Australia Ties Become comprehensive Strategic Partnership

After over 50 years of diplomatic relations, Vietnam and Australia have built a solid and comprehensive relationship based on mutual strategic trust and understanding. During the official visit to Australia by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh in March, upon the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, both sides announced the upgrade of their bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
