New Impetus for Vietnam – Laos Relations

From March 5-10, 2017, Chairwoman of the Laos National Assembly Pany Yathotou paid a friendly official visit to Vietnam which was considered an important landmark to celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic ties (September 5, 1962 – September 5, 2017) and the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Vietnam – Laos Treaty of Amity and Cooperation (July 18, 1977 – July 18, 2017). The visit aimed at promoting cooperation in different aspects and   strengthening the special solidarity between the two countries. 
At their talks, National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and her Lao counterpart Pany Yathotou discussed many important issues in boosting cooperation of the two nations and global issues of mutual concern.

Both legislative leaders affirmed that in the context of increasingly complicated developments in the world and the region, the two sides need to continue working closely together and supporting each other at global and regional forums, and sub-regional cooperation mechanisms; deepening the cooperation process and connection of the ASEAN community; speeding up solidarity, developing the central role of ASEAN and maintaining common stance of ASEAN in strategic issues of the region.

The two sides also agreed that the two parliaments should hasten their governments to roll out policies and measures to further bolster bilateral links in trade, investment and education. Committees of the two legislative bodies need to continue their supervision of the implementation of commitments and cooperation agreements reached between their governments, especially those concerning border issues, natural resources and the environment.

The two National Assemblies will coordinate closely to accelerate the construction of the parliament building in Laos for its vital role to strengthen the special ties between Vietnam and Laos.

The friendly official visit of the Lao top legislator had a very important meaning in strengthening the special solidarity and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties, States and National Assemblies deeply and effectively.

During the visit, Chairwoman of the Laos National Assembly Pany Yathotou paid a courtesy visit to Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, State President Tran Dai Quang and met with Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc; received a delegation of the Vietnam – Laos Friendship Association, the liaison committee of Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts; had a working trip to Ho Chi Minh City, Ca Mau and Bac Lieu provinces; and attended many important activities.
