Hanoi, September 23 (VNA) –The Southwestern Steering Committee and provincial officials have visited and presented gifts to monks and families of the Khmer ethnic group on the occasion of the 2014 Sene Dolta festival in Mekong Delta Bac Lieu province and Can Tho City.
The delegations wished the Khmer people a joyous and prosperous SenDolta festival, and called for their further contribution to the common process of the country’s development.
Additionally, the provincial delegation visited and presented hundreds of gifts to Khmer pagodas, ethnic boarding schools and other local agencies.
Meanwhile, Can Tho authorities also gave nearly 100 gifts, worth 30 million VND (1,428 USD) to Khmer pagodas, local retired people and social policy beneficiaries of outstanding Khmer families in the city.
Tran Thanh Man, Secretary of Can Tho City’s Party Committee, hailed the contribution made by the Union of Patriotic Monks’ Can Tho chapter in maintaining social order, and spoke highly of Khmer people’s efforts in shaping and preserving the national cultural identity and diversity in the Mekong Delta.
This year’s Sene Dolta festival takes place from September 22–24.
Sene Dolta is one of the largest annual Khmer festivals, along with Chol Chnam Thmay (New Year) and Ooc Oom Bok, a festival that pays tribute to the Moon for good harvests.
During the Sene Dolta festival, Khmer people get together to pay tribute to their ancestors and enjoy traditional songs and dance after a hard year’s work.
